10th Grade
In 10th grade, you feel more comfortable with the school and you now know how to navigate the building. The schedule is more familiar to you and you are better acquainted with the high school teachers, counselors, administrators, and coaches. You also now have a High School Transcript and Grade Point Average (G.P.A).
Also important- Students, start to think about what career you may want to pursue. If students are interested in vocational/technical training, we encourage them to look into the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute (LCTI) on a part-time or full-time basis. ● Join extracurricular activities at school and volunteer in the community. With the variety of clubs, sports, and leadership opportunities offered, you may find an endeavor that meets your interests and which allows you to give back to your school/community and to develop important leadership skills. Clubs and student groups will advertise meetings throughout the school year. You can access the daily announcements on the WHS Website for club and sports information.
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the United States. This test will take place at the high school on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Any 10th grade student may take this test for practice for $18.00. It is an excellent opportunity for sophomores to understand their strengths and weaknesses regarding eventually taking the actual SAT. Watch for the registration dates in the Morning Announcements. (All 11th grade students will be scheduled to take this test at no charge).
ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTS- May 6-17, 2024-Students interested in taking AP tests must pay all exam fees to actually sit for the exams. Students will receive AP credit weight towards their high school cumulative GPA regardless of whether they take the exam in May. Students who opt not to take the AP Exam must take a final exam for that course.
SEPTEMBER
• Mid-September begins the process of registering for the October PSAT, if desired (see the above PSAT information).
• Join extracurricular activities at school and volunteer in the community. Clubs and student groups will advertise meetings throughout the school year. Check the Morning Announcements through the WHS website for club and sports information. Make sure that you inform your counselor of any clubs or activities that you have joined so they can be included on your transcript.
• Review your transcript with your counselor to see if your progress matches your career/academic aspirations.
OCTOBER
• Continue to become immersed in activities throughout high school. Colleges are especially interested in those students who assume leadership positions, and those who take initiative in the community!
SPRING, 2024
With the assistance of your counselor, continue to think about life after high school! Take the most challenging courses that you can handle as a Junior (2024-2025). All career options such as the military, college, or the workforce remain open to you. Shadow individuals are involved in these endeavors and begin to plan visits to all institutions. Apply for summer jobs and have an active summer!
